I have been doing food history since 1971, from hearth to wood-burning cookstove cookery, specializing in New England and food at sea, but interested in everything and everywhere. I have been publishing Food History News, a quarterly ten page newsletter since 1989, and rejoice in all the newcomers to the field. I eat modern and traditional, and local, so local that an awful lot of our food comes from within 100 feet of the backdoor of our island home. and much of the rest from mainland Maine. Our household has done this for more than ten years. The notable exceptions are the cup of java in the morning and chocolate, and of course, wine, all of which remind me I am a citizen of the world. Luckily, food history has taught me how to be a locovore and cooking seasonally has been on my mind for over thirty years. I am also the author of Saltwater Foodways, (Mystic Seaport, 1995) and Food in Colonial and Federal America (Greenwood, 2005) and with Kathleen Curtin,  co-author of Giving Thanks: Thanksgiving History and Recipes from Pilgrims to Pumpkin Pie (Clarkson Potter, 2005), and write regular columns for various Maine publications.
