Pinckney: What's not to crave about junk food? It appeals to all our tastes. It is sweet, salty, sometimes sour and almost always loaded with fat - which the body needs to function. And, of course, it's easy In the boom and bust cycle of human evolution the "eat it while you got it" impulse is survival. Junk manufacturers have ably cashed in on this and we eat it to excess. Cynthia: Do people actually crave French fries? I like a good French fry, but I could go forever without thinking about French fries. Now hash browns, those I crave. Once, on a driving trip with my mom (long ago, when I was still in my 20s) I had hash browns for every meal for three days straight. Haven't done that since then, but I'd still take hash browns over French fries, given a choice. And then there was the Ruben sandwich jag I went on a couple of years after the hash brown binge. Today, I'm more likely to get an overwhelming craving for cheese, foie gras, or noodles with truffle oil. Fortunately, cheese or noodles with truffle oil are fairly easy to get. (Though I'm worried now, after reading the "Coping" article, that I might be addicted to dairy products and/or wheat. So maybe I need to look at French fries, since they aren't on the "addicting" list.) comment left Jul 10, 2008 |
