Grandma Maria's Spicy Tomato Sauce

This recipe has been in our family for over a century, originating from the Apulia region in Italy. Italian San Marzano tomatoes are preferred for this recipe, but if you can't find them, Progresso whole peeled tomatoes put through a food mill is a good option.

Putting tomatoes through a food mill eliminates seeds and reduces the sometimes bitter or sour taste of the tomato.

Old New Amsterdam SuperBowl Snacks

New Yorkers are as proud of their rich history, as they are of their sports teams. Long before the G-Men their were the Dutch Settlers. And long before Eli was marching his team down the field, Henri Hudson was sailing his boat up one of New York's longest rivers.

So it seems appropriate to pay a little homage to New York's fine history by imagining what the Dutch Settlers of the 1600s might of been snacking on this coming Sunday while they cheered on their New Amsterdam Giants!

New Netherlands Cole Slaw

Turkey Wheat (a.k.a. Indian Corn) Porridge

Dutch Waffels

Dutch Hutspot (meaning hodgepodge), which consisted of cornmeal porridge cooked with chunks of corned beef and root vegetables.

Roast duck with dumplings, pork with cabbage

Oliekocken might have been served as a sweet snack. These pastries were made with raised yeast dough, shaped into small balls, and fried in hot lard until golden brown....and you guessed it garnered the name "Doughnuts"

To find these recipes and more from the Giant Fans' forefathers check out these books:

The Sensible Cook: Dutch Foodways in the Old and the New World

Food and Recipes of the Thirteen Colonies

And for the more modern New York historian you might also enjoy Arthur Schwartz's New York City Food: An Opinionated History and More Than 100 Legendary Recipes with lots of favorite recipes for of New Yorkers far and wide.

Oh and if you are wondering what the colonists might have done for entertainment in between SuperBowl Sunday and the first pre-season game....Bowling of course. The first Dutch settlers brought bowling to the United States in the 1600s. So if you are looking for something to do after game time look no further than your local Bowling Alley.

Enjoy the SuperBowl and Go Giants!

Gezondheid!

Taking a page from Giada

As I was thinking about some of Giada De Laurentiis books and Italian recpies, I was struck by how time and again she stresses cooking with the freshest ingredients and how simplicity can so often be the key to some of the most enjoyable dishes.

So I started to ponder which Bay Area restaurants served some of the freshest and simplest Italian food. And with that I present you my top three choices:

A16 http://www.a16sf.com/

Bar Bambino http://www.barbambino.com/

InCanto http://www.incanto.biz/

I've also heard great things about Poggio in Sausalito, though I've never been and would certainly give honorable mention to Bistro Don Giovanni in Napa.

Please share your favorite Bay Area Italian resturants that live up to Giada's fresh and simple philosophy.
