In rsearching the origins of strawberry shortcake, I determined that this 1872 printing is identical to the 1857 book by Mrs. Ellett, who was far more interested in literature than cooking once she finished this fascinating collection. The shortcake recipe appears to be the second in a printed cookbook, following one by Eliza Leslie in 1850.
