The Worst Food in America

Men's Health Magazine has named the worst food in America, and it's Outback Steak House Aussie Cheese Fries with Ranch Dressing. I want some right now. The only thing wrong with cheese fries is that instead of cheese they use that mysterious orange stuff you get on the nachos at your local multiplex.

Cheese fries can never be the worst food in America as long as someone is still putting pineapple on pizza.

When he was in high school, my son introduced me to the ultimate decadent topping for french fries: Not ranch dressing, but bleu cheese dressing. I'd like to see that on the Outback Steak House menu!

	vcurran: Marc Hurwitz of Boston's Hidden Restaurants recommends the poutine at Montreal French Fries in West Bridgewater, MA. Here's a quote from his blog: "Montreal French Fries . . was the highlight of the trip . . . [it] looks like a cross between a clam shack and a used car dealership [with] hockey paraphernalia on the walls. . . . The poutine was excellent, with cheddar cheese curds sitting atop tasty fries and all mixed together with dark gravy. 	vcurran: Oh, I know cheese fries are bad for you, with or without chili, but sometimes you just have to have a big plate of something that's greasy AND starchy AND salty. The key word is "sometimes." Otherwise you find yourself shopping at Jabba the Hutt's Big & Tall Shop. When my family and I lived in Watertown, MA, we used to get pizza at a place on Trapelo Road called Belmont Pizza. (Belmont, MA was a dry town in those days, so it was full of great take-out joints, but hardly a decent sit-down restaurant in the whole town.) They had great pizza, but the real draw was the onion rings. When you walked in and ordered them, they'd slice up a big fresh onion right in front of you, dip the rings in batter, and toss them in the Fryolator--none of those frozen jobs. I'll have to go back there sometime and see if they still make them that way. comment left May 17, 2008

(Maybe it's because my father-in-law was an Ontario lad of Celtic stock, not a drop of French blood in him.) 	Cynthia: Hard to imagine how cheese fries could beat out the tasty but grease-soaked Awesome Blossom and its relatives. Of course, cheese fries could only take top honors with this limited to the United States. If we include Canada, then Poutine would have to win.
